This 1,176-acre park provides a green oasis between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD. A refuge for native plants and animals, it's a favorite local spot for camping, hiking, and picnicking. The park was transferred from the Public Housing Authority on August 3, 1950.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

 

Bicycling, hiking, jogging, picnicking, walking. Facilities: Information kiosk, 10 mi of trails. Picnic tables. Programs & Events: Natural, service, and cultural resource programs. National Trails Day events (1st Sat., June), Potomac River Watershed Cleanup (early Apr.), National Park Week (late Apr.), Public Lands Day (Sept.). Tips & Hints: Busiest Memorial Day weekend, least crowded in Jan. and Feb.

 Camping: In the park: Greenbelt Campground (174 sites; $14; flush toilets, showers).

 

FEES & HOURS

 

Free. Rangers on duty Labor Day-Memorial Day, Fri.-Sun. 8-4; Memorial Day-Labor Day, weekdays 8-7. Headquarters open weekdays 8-4. Self-registration campground open daily.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

 

12 mi from Washington, DC, 38 mi from Baltimore via 1-95 to Exit 23 (Kenilworth Ave. S); turn left on Greenbelt Rd. E, park is on right. Closest Metro subway stop is Greenbelt Station (2lA mi). Closest airport: Washington, DC (Reagan Washington National, 17 mi), Baltimore (21 mi).
